Quantenna and MediaTek Partner to Lead 802.11ac MU-MIMO Interoperability

Quantenna’s world’s fastest MU-MIMO 4x4 802.11ac access point interoperates with MediaTek’s leading 802.11ac MU-MIMO mobile client to create a true multi-vendor industry ecosystem

AMSTERDAM – IBC 2014 – September 11, 2014 -- Quantenna Communications, Inc. the leader in ultra-high performance Wi-Fi announced today in advance of IBC 2014 that it has achieved 802.11ac Multi-User Multiple-Input-and-Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) Interoperability in cooperation with MediaTek, a worldwide market leader in innovative chipsets for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular 3G/LTE, and HDTV. The companies have been working closely together on product interoperability testing and are showing how MU-MIMO improves user experience while optimizing network efficiency to conserve precious spectrum resources.

The full potential of today’s MIMO access points is not being realized due to the dominance of simple mobile devices and challenging channel conditions. With MU-MIMO, which allows concurrent transmissions from massive/high order MIMO access points to multiple lower order clients like single antenna mobile devices, spectral efficiency and network performance can both be significantly increased. The improvements in spectral efficiency result in higher performance in the same channels.

“We are delighted to see our collaboration with MediaTek result in the delivery of this key industry milestone of 802.11ac MU-MIMO interoperability,” said Sam Heidari, CEO of Quantenna Communications. “A true ecosystem requires multiple vendors and we are pleased to be working closely with MediaTek. MU-MIMO is the revolutionary feature of 802.11ac, just as MIMO was to 802.11n. Wireless traffic is growing exponentially, primarily driven by streaming video services and applications. Serving this growth while improving performance must be done with the maximum spectral efficiency.”

“We believe that MU-MIMO is an important technology for enhanced performance in response to the more populous multi-client environment and growing number of devices at home,” said SR Tsai, general manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Connectivity and Networking Business Unit. “Interoperability is a critical step to bring the true value of MU-MIMO to our customers. MediaTek has shipped billions of wireless chipsets, and thus we understand and appreciate industry partnership that gives our customers the best wireless experience. We are excited to announce our cooperation with Quantenna to create a true multi-vendor 802.11ac MU-MIMO ecosystem.”
