Quantenna Debuts First 4x4 MIMO Wireless Video Bridge Reference Design to Deliver Full 802.11n Specification for Whole-Home Wi-Fi® Coverage

Full-11n™ 4x4 MIMO Technology with Digital Beamforming Optimizes Home Entertainment Networking

FREMONT, Calif., December 2, 2009 - Quantenna Communications, Inc., a leader in ultra-reliable Full-11n™ Wi-Fi networking for whole-home entertainment, today announced the availability of a complete reference design that speeds the development of products based on Quantenna’s Full-11n chipsets. Quantenna Full-11n devices are the first to deliver all industry-standard 802.11n features necessary for reliable high-definition TV (HDTV) and 1080p video performance, including 4x4 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), adaptive transmit digital beamforming technology, and wireless channel monitoring and optimizing.

Delivering wireless home-entertainment solutions has been difficult until the advent of advanced video-handling technologies including 4x4 MIMO and digital beamforming, which are part of the latest 802.11n specifications. “Quantenna has achieved a major industry milestone by incorporating all critical IEEE 802.11n features required for contemporary video applications into this reference design, while assuring backwards compatibility with Wi-Fi products that have already been deployed by hundreds of millions of users worldwide,” said Craig Mathias, a Principal at the mobile and wireless advisory firm Farpoint Group. “Quantenna’s Full-11n components enable a whole new generation of wireless-LAN products with the reliability and performance to deliver full HD video content wirelessly in maximum resolution, anywhere in the home.”

Quantenna’s Full-11n devices meet the so called “Gold Standard” required for entertainment wireless networking. This includes delivering up to four flawless high-definition (HD) video streams at more than 100 Mbps data rates, over 100 feet, and guaranteeing this performance nearly 100 percent of the time through near-zero packet error rate (PER) data transfers, regardless of signal interferences and dead zones that are typical of most residential environments.

“Quantenna’s Full-11n wireless networking products will be the first of their kind to deliver the reliability necessary for whole-home Wi-Fi networking and video distribution, anywhere in the home,” said David French, Quantenna’s CEO. “Our pioneering products provide capabilities that are increasingly critical, for service delivery and home entertainment including ultra-low-latency, multiplayer on-line games, and multi-channel video with up to full HD quality and 1080p resolution.”

Technical Details

At the heart of Quantenna’s wireless video bridge reference design is the company’s QHS600 device, whose industry-high data rates are enabled by a powerful multi-core processing architecture that drives a 4x4 MIMO radio/transceiver augmented with adaptive digital beamforming plus channel monitoring and optimizing.

Quantenna’s QHS600 wireless video bridge reference design delivers five times the coverage of other 802.11n solutions across the 5 GHz frequency band, ensuring the ultra-low system latencies necessary for real-time applications such as online bidirectional video-game controllers. Content and privacy security is ensured without compromising performance by using an integrated DSP engine for higher-layer security acceleration. Additionally, a variety of Quantenna features ensure ultra-simplified setup, including auto detection of access point and bridge mode, and security pre-configuration with single-touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup when new devices are added to the network.

Product Availability

The QHS600 wireless video bridge reference kit is available now, and consists of an evaluation board plus cables for connecting it to an external controller through Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet or USB 2.0 ports. Also included is a complete software developer’s kit (SDK) that implements the entire networking and device discovery/connectivity functionality required for a wireless video bridge module supporting the 802.11n standard. Additionally, Quantenna and LitePoint have worked together to provide a full test suite of specialized video-over-wireless radio frequency (RF) calibration and performance-characterization software, including an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI).
